How to Stick to your New Year’s Resolution this Year

It’s a new year, which means it’s time for you to make – and try to keep – a new resolution. Keeping a resolution is much easier said than done and to ensure that you give yourself the best shot at succeeding, it’s important to establish a way to monitor your progress and reward yourself when you reach milestones.

How to Stick to your New Year’s ResolutionPopular resolutions and how to stick to them:

  • Keeping the home organized: Better home organization is always a popular New Year’s resolution. The best way to fulfill this resolution is to take immediate corrective action. Purchase bill and document organizers, so materials aren’t scattered about randomly. Clean out your filing cabinets and shred materials that are no longer needed. And go through all the closets, donating items you don’t need any more to make way for new items. The best way to keep the New Year’s resolution of organization is to take action – maybe even schedule a new organization task within the home each week.
  • Quitting smoking: Getting healthy is another popular New Year’s resolution, and a big part of getting healthy is quitting smoking. To keep this resolution, find the smoking cessation method that works for you and stick to it. Reward yourself if you’ve succeeding after one week, one month and so on with small prizes, like dinner out, a day off work or something else you can look forward to.
  • Losing weight: Losing weight is another big part of getting healthy for many. The first step to losing weight is going on a diet. The second part is exercising. The best way to uphold this resolution is to have someone with a similar New Year’s goal, like a spouse or a friend. This way, you have a spotter – someone who shares a similar goal and can be there to motivate and hold you accountable for your progress or lack of progress.

Like we said, keeping a New Year’s resolution is much more difficult than starting a New Year’s resolution. But with a little bit of additional investment, success is much more probable.
